A WALK IN THE WOODS – GOOSE ISLAND COUNTY PARK

The cool fall weather has arrived, and it's the perfect time to get out, and explore the many hiking and biking trails that Wisconsin is famous for.

One of my favorite places to walk and enjoy the outdoors is Goose Island County Park. Just three miles south of La Crosse, on WI-35, this special island sits surrounded by the backwaters of the Mississippi River. I headed over for an afternoon walk on this mid-September day—a bit cloudy, but that's fine with me; the temperature is about 65F.

I parked near one of the boat ramps and headed north along the water to the far end of the park, then joined the North Loop trail. I passed a few fishermen along the way, but once I stepped onto the two-mile loop, I had the trail entirely to myself.

I meandered along the easy path, appreciating the beauty of the oak, maple, elm, and ash trees along the way. The leaves are still green, but soon they will be changing to their majestic fall colors. Other than squirrels, I didn't notice any deer or other wildlife that I might expect to see here—just a few birds singing somewhere in the distance. At the end of my walk. I lingered on a quiet bench overlooking the Mississippi backwaters.

On the drive home, I set a goal for myself: to take advantage of these cool fall days and explore as many nearby parks and trails as possible.
